Boston Collaboratory School - Mentoring Horizontally, Up, Down and Sideways

Plans for a new way of connecting students with their community

Problem: Schools and students are tradionally disconnected from their community and seldom do they work on interrelated projects that will benefit both the school and the people of the community.

Solution: Mentoring students to devlop free software, such as the Drupal content management system, will introduce students to the myriad of careers and skills necessary to build a successful web presence - cooperatively. A web presence is more than just a website and also includes items like video, audio, and content that is compelling. No longer are we limited to a brochure online type of approach. Engaging people is the name of the game now. Beyond a web presence, students will also be mentored in ways to engage their community in building platform tools owned by the community.

Migration from WebTestBase to BrowserTestBase

The UnitTest initiative wants to get rid of the Drupal-only Simpletest module. To do this it is necessary to update the functional tests of our modules to stop using the WebTestBase (WTB) class, which is part of the Simpletest module.

Now we need to use the BrowserTestBase (BTB) class and migrate the tests from one to the other.

Migrating from WTB to BTB is relatively straightforward (unless you have to use something which hasn’t been ported yet.

Adding Bootstrap button stylings to Drupal 8's action links and node links

When all goes according to plan—which is surprisingly often—theming in Drupal 8 is a straightforward matter of editing templates and stylesheets. We found things did not go according to plan when styling page-level action links (such as "Add new Forum topic") and content-level action links (or node links as Drupal 8 still calls them, such as "read more" or "add comment"). We are going to show how to add Bootstrap-specific styles, but the same approaches would be useful to add special stylings, button-like or otherwise, to selected action links and node links. Continue reading to learn how we were able to apply the styles we wanted.
